Ranch - Registered Kunekune Pigs

    About Kunekune

Kunekune are a small breed pasture lard pig. They are small enough to butcher on farm, reaching only around 300 pounds. They do respect fences better than most other pig breeds, are sweet and affectionate, and tend to not root and tear up pasture like other breeds. They can get a good portion of their nutrition from pasture. Unlike feeder pigs, kunekune take much longer, 16-18 months, to reach maturity. Feed costs tend to average out the same as with feeder pigs. Mature kunekunes get about 4 lbs. of feed per day. If allowed free feed, they will become overweight, so feed must be rationed. Gilts need to be kept within a healthy weight range and bred around one year old, or they can become infertile. Meat cuts will be smaller, richer in flavor, and darker red than store bought. Kunekune are a lard pig. They will produce a larger quantity of fat that is great for soap making, or adding to leaner meats, such as venison, for flavor and making sausage.

    Meet the Breeders

    Boar - HLC Kevin Bacon

KB is such a sweetheart. LAZZZZYYYY! He has less energy in his entire body than any of the girls have in their curly tails. Of course my first boar would have to be be named Kevin Bacon. It's kind of a given. He has Kevin's similar laid back attitude in spades. Kevin and Kyra are unrelated out of Hannah Carpenter in Reading, KS.

    Sow - HLC Kyra [unwattled]

Of course Kevin Bacon's wife is named Kyra, and she's just as sweet, sassy and curly haired as her namesake. Kyra's my pig girl. Love her to pieces.

    Sow - MFF Kourtney

Kevin Bacon was in the 2002 crime thriller movie "Trapped" starring with Courtney Love. Once again names tend to be true. This girl is pure sass. She and her sister get into so much trouble due to their curious and adventurous natures. Sweet as can be, complete darlings, but independent and thrill seekers.

    Sow - MFF Kristy

In the movie "She's Having a Baby," Kevin Bacon's character's wife was Kristy. Getting a pic of this one is a challenge. She's so dang curious that she's always right up on me. She and Kourtney are litter mates out of Malvitz Family Farm in Centerview, MO.
