American rabbits are a rare heritage breed developed by Lewis Salisbury in 1917 for both meat and fur. They have come back from "critical" status in the early 2000s with only 200 known in existence. They are now considered "threatened/rare," by the American Heritage Breeds Conservancy. JCFS is proud to be a supporter of bringing this breed back into sustainable levels. American rabbits are a part of the Slow Food USA Project under Ark of Taste.
American is a very docile and lazy breed, making great pets for older children and adults. The breed is too timid for younger children. Pet rabbits will be available one weaned, but must be ordered earlier so that we can take the time to handle the kit and get it acclimated to interaction.
Males average 8-10 lbs. and females average 12-14 lbs. They have a short, thick, fly-back coat. Their breed-standard mandolin shape requires special show posture posing.
We offer quality purebred breeders in both pedigreed and non-pedigreed options. Meat rabbits, on the other hand, are bred for size and not purity of genetics or form. Meat rabbits and meat kits are crosses between white and blue Americans and will not meet breed standards.
Our rabbit meat processes at an average of 2.5lbs. each for an average price of $8/lb. Price is per processed rabbit, they are not sold by weight.
